Be wary of online scams

Online scams are a constant, and we are constantly working to protect our users from them. An oldie but a goodie has been reported recently, where Gumtree users received a scam email asking to verify their account identity. Unfortunately, these types of scam emails are made to look like they are sent from Gumtree and it can be hard to tell the difference between real Gumtree emails and scam emails.

Gumtree will never ask you to verify your account identity via email.

Whenever you are entering your account details, make sure you are on a secure website. To do so, make sure:

  1. The URL starts with “HTTPS://”
  2. There an image of a padlock
  3. The URL is obviously of the site you are intending to log in to

Take a look at the two examples below to see the difference the actual Gumtree URL and a scam URL.
